Challenge

Drum & Bass artist, Typo, wanted a way to visualise the internal conflict that occurs throughout their music making process. An ever changing mindset with moments of intense clarity contrasted with feelings of self doubt, anxiety and imposter syndrome.

Concept sketches

Expressive typography was used to visualise the contrast between clarity, self-doubt, and anxiety. Shifting between legible and distorted, illegible type to visually represent the mental transition from confidence to anxiety to self-doubt.

Key framing emotional states

Key frames were created exploring different ways the typography could be distorted to visualise different feelings and emotions.

Keyframe image showing the word typo stretched and distorted beyond recognition.
Keyframe image showing the word typo distorted so much that it is an illegible texture.

Animating between states

Using motion to highlight tension, the changing letter forms mirror how thoughts can move from focused and clear to overwhelming and chaotic.

Animation showing the word typo morph between being clear and legible to stretched and distorted and unreadable.

Inspiring release artwork

Stills were taken from the animation and matched with musical themes; creating a starting point for the release artwork.

Inverted designs were produced to further highlight the contrast between positive and negative feelings experienced during the creative process.
